He reached into his right -hand pocket and pulled out a white handkerchief with red polka-dots. His shoulders continued to quiver, though, and now he smiled ruefully as he looked at her, shaking his head back and forth as if to say, ‘You got me that time’. XXX Then she darted inside the house, closing and locking the door behind her with a loud click. As she ran into the room she heard him outside. He quickly pulled it away and hitched his jeans up. The house was set half a mile back into the woods from the road, a two-lane asphalt not much traveled. And then she realized that something had changed –something within her—since that moment in the library when she had deliberately and consciously given herself to him.
